Few days back I came across this website www.ashamaluevmusic.com where you can download free background music with different licenses. You can get the license by supporting the artist through patreon. The website’s main target user groups are content creators on the internet and film makers. This is the screen shot of their website.

Once I started using it, I felt the website clearly lacked few basic things for a better user experience. I asked a couple of content creators and my friends to navigate through the website, especially the homepage and based on their feedback I understood, the home page had

  1. Poor Navigation
  2. Bad Informational Architechure
  3. Heavy Content
  4. Poor UI

So I redesigned it!

According to aesthetic-usability effect, people tend to believe that things that look better will work better. The Homepage had the text “search” which upon clicking opens up the search bar. Instead I added search bar directly on the top, so that it will be easy for the users to both search and browse as well. I also simplfied the navigation and gave prominence to the patreon account of the artist.

I reworked on the Informational architecture better by aligning the Licenses and music based on the Genre, Mood, Instrument and moved it to the filters. The advantage of this is the user can easily navigate and select multiple options, which is not in the original case. I also added “duration” as a check box for better search results.

Redesigned the song box into card for more visual appeal and for easy scanning. Primary action being download and secondary be buy license and tertiary be stream and share.

After working on the navigation, Information architechture and the UI, here is the final version of the redesigned home page after multiple iterations.

Here is the prototype version of the Home Page Redesign

Finally I asked a couple of content creators and my friends to go through the new home page and they found it pleasing and easy to navigate compared to the existing home page.
